Casa Barranca
Point Leo, VIC, Australia
The Space
Located just 70 kilometres south east of Melbourne on the Mornington Peninsula, Casa Barranca is one of the most architecturally significant production locations in Australia. Inspired by Brazilian modernism and the expressive forms of Oscar Niemeyer's Casa Canoas, this boldly conceived residence merges raw materiality with a seamless relationship to its natural surroundings, offering an unparalleled setting for large scale productions, high end brand activations and exclusive events.
The architecture is immediately commanding. A sweeping concrete roofline softens the structure's form while the concrete slab is delicately lifted above the terrain, allowing native grasses to weave beneath the building as it appears to hover above the landscape. The bold interplay of fluid curves, polished concrete and dramatic light and shadow creates a visually striking environment that is as adaptable as it is distinctive. Set within an expansive landscape that balances open grasslands with a forested sanctuary, the property frames a central courtyard where a circular pool and spa serve as the defining focal point. Visually open balustrades maintain an uninterrupted connection to the treed backdrop, dissolving the boundary between architecture and environment.
Inside, the house is designed for effortless flow. A continuous open plan kitchen, dining and living space provides an expansive canvas for both high end productions and intimate gatherings. The material palette is intentionally restrained — polished concrete, black aluminium and warm Australian timbers — allowing the architecture to read as a bold yet refined presence. Strategically placed roof apertures channel daylight into key spaces, enhancing the depth, texture and drama of the interiors throughout the day.
Bedrooms are oriented toward the courtyard along the perimeter, offering private retreats that remain connected to the landscape. A concealed garage and gallery space functions as both a theatrical reveal and a showcase for art or luxury vehicles, adding further dimension to the property's potential as a high impact event location. At the southern end, a multi-functional timber joinery piece integrates a study, bookcase, record player and lounge nook, transforming the central living space into an environment designed for atmosphere and conversation.
A series of operable timber shutters allows the house to shift from an open, light filled environment to a fully secluded retreat, offering complete flexibility for film and event staging. The rooftop space, positioned to capture glimpses of the ocean, introduces a further layer of depth to an already dynamic setting.
Casa Barranca is an architectural experience as much as a location. Whether capturing a cinematic moment, producing a high fashion editorial or hosting an exclusive luxury activation, the property provides an extraordinary backdrop that elevates any creative vision brought to it.
