The Lab
Gardenvale, VIC, Australia
The Space
Carefully crafted, architecturally designed by dual Harold Desbrowe Annear Award winner (best home in Australia) Michael Markham. The Lab celebrates a timber aesthetic with a few quirky features but otherwise perfect simplicity. There are a number of fantastic views between spaces, and the cottage aesthetic of the retained part of the 1910 cottage (which houses the light filled bedrooms) complements the modern addition (living/kitchen/dining/bath). There is a beautiful crepe myrtle in the wrap around courtyard, that is paved with the bricks taken from the deconstructed old kitchen, which provides dappled light and shade and white blossom for much of the year, but is deciduous in winter. Floor to ceiling expanses of glass (triple glazed) in the extension create a fantastically day lit space.
