The Space
This historic homestead, founded 1843 is the birthplace of the Australian Kelpie and a significant landmark associated with the early European settlement of the Western District of Victoria. Owned by the same family for almost 150 years, the homestead sits on its own 200 acres of land, nestled within a property of over 7000 acres total offering a unique and versatile setting for period productions.
This location is architecturally significant as the most comprehensive and intact group of nineteenth century farm buildings in Victoria and for its intentionally comprehensive harmonious architecture. With grand Gothic Revival architecture featured throughout the sprawling grounds, there are 33 buildings ranging from the 1865 12 stand wool-shed, a workshop with saw-pit and other buildings of historical significance including the main homestead.
The grand 1846 homestead features a cigar room, drawing room, dining room, original kitchen, 5 bedrooms, flooring made from adzed red gum boards and a verandah that still has the original Douglas Pump that's connected to the well below. The rooms throughout the homestead are all period furnished with high ceilings and ornate detail with some rooms including original hand made furniture. The original cottage (1843) was made from Van Diemen's Land split palings and black-wood shingles. Extensive Gardens were redeveloped in 1935 and features well planned lawns, rows of shrubs, garden beds with roses, flowers and exotic trees. The long flowing hedge on the front side of the house is 180 years old.
The property features a number of horse drawn buggies, a single horse drawn fire pump, original tractors, machinery and period correct farm tools, including the original owners personal workshop tools. Onsite are a number of boats used in the 1920s on the Glenelg river by the ladies of the day. Livestock can also be provided subject to availability. This location provides an authentic backdrop for 19th century period productions with it's historical significance, grand architecture and picturesque natural beauty.
